What the Heck is Chlorophyll Anyway?

What the Heck is Chlorophyll Anyway?

Chlorophyll water (liquid chlorophyll dietary supplements mixed with H20) has been all over social media these days from Tik Tok, to Instagram, and even Pinterest. But what is it really and what are the supposed benefits for your health and wellness?

Well, we’re glad you asked, because we did a little digging to see why this superfood has been so prevalent in recent months.

What is Chlorophyll?

Chlorophyll is a compound present in plants that pairs with sunlight to help a plant get its nutrients. It is present in green vegetables and found in higher concentrations in leafy greens such as collard or mustard greens, spinach, alfalfa, parsley, wheatgrass, etc.

Some believe that taking chlorophyll straight (rather than from greens) allows for better absorption than eating foods containing chlorophyll because some of its potency is lost during the cooking and digestion processes.

Why Would You Try Liquid Chlorophyll?

Here are some of the reasons why other people have been trying chlorophyll of late:

Skin Benefits

Chlorophyll can possibly help reduce inflammation and bacterial growth (in wounds or skin conditions like acne). It has also found its way into facial masks and other topical treatments as an added booster for a more healthy-looking complexion.

Blood Building Properties

Chlorophyll has a similar chemical makeup to hemoglobin, a protein in your red blood cells, so it could help the body build quality red blood cells (helpful for conditions such as anemia). Red blood cells are vital to our health and wellness, because they carry oxygen from the lungs to our tissues during the respiration process.

Helps Fight Body Odor

A few studies suggest that chlorophyll is helpful in eliminating trimethylamines for those with trimethylaminuria (a condition that causes a fishy odor). Some people have also tried chlorophyll with their pets to help with their gums and oral health, though, there is very little research to support that it can help with bad breath.

Helps Boost Energy Levels

Just like other sources with lots of antioxidants and nutrients, chlorophyll helps promote overall health and wellness. It also supports a healthy immune system, which increases your energy levels.

Supporting Healthy Digestion & Metabolism

It’s suggested that chlorophyll can be helpful for our microbiomes and increase the healthy bacteria within our digestive tracts. A healthy and balanced microbiome is essential. When our microbiome and digestion are out of whack, it can lead to weight gain, high cholesterol, and other health issues.

NOTE: Most chlorophyll supplements list the main ingredient as chlorophyllin and contain copper rather than magnesium or iron.
